The written paper :
You must produce a written paper of at least 1000 words of academic analysis, although submissions of about 2,000 words are expected to reflect the depth of analysis needed in which you critically examine ONE strategic concept from the module that is relevant to your recommended future option for the organisation (Boots pharmacy). Strategic concepts include:
– Core competencies
– Generic strategies, either cost leadership or differentiation, or focused cost leadership or differentiation, or outpacing.
– Mergers and acquisitions
– Alliances
– Outsourcing
– CSR and shared value
– Blue ocean strategy
– BSC
– Capability development and agility
– Culture change
You must demonstrate you have a deep understanding of the strategic concept you apply. You must do this by critically examining the concept. Research a minimum of 10 peer-reviewed articles about the concept from the research literature. Note, that this is the absolute minimum. To improve your mark, a larger number of peer-reviewed journal articles would help. Ensure that you make use of the UoC online library and Emerald to do your literature search. Examine what different researchers say about how the concept is used in practice, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and how the concept can be adapted or strengthened to make it effective in the organisation you have discussed in your oral presentation. Note, you must apply theory to practice by saying what the organisation you discuss in your oral presentation must do to make the concept work in practice.
The paper should be of a critical nature for both the analysis of the concept and for the recommendations you propose that the organisation must consider to make the concept work in practice. You should cite sources to underpin the discussion. See the university website for insights if necessary, such as https://my.cumbria.ac.uk/Student-Life/Learning/Skills-Cumbria/Critical-Writing/.
All sources should be correctly referenced using the Harvard system, as for any professional academic document.

3. Academic analysis – critical examination of the concept, with details of what the organisation discussed in the oral presentation must do to make it work in practice. The discussion must be suitably referenced to the academic literature. The Academic Analysis should follow the following format:
1 The concept
1.1 Definition and presentation of the concept
1.2 Strengths and weaknesses of the concept
2 How to make the concept work in practice
3 Attention needed by your organisation to make it work
Conclusion
4. List of references
