Henry David Thoreau lived from 1817 to 1862. He was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher. Along with his good friend Emerson, he was known to be one of the founders of transcendentalism wherein he argued for human rights such as freedom from slavery, freedom from government control, and environmentalism. One year, he lived on Emerson’s property, near Waldon Pond, in an effort to prove human’s can live with nature. He also introduced the idea and practice of “Passive Resistance” which civil rights leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King studied and practiced in their own campaigns.
