Write general personal statement for top law schools. Some background: my GPA is not competitive and poses a severe headwind to the application process but my test score is really good. I moved from Newark NJ to Vienna VA when I was 16 where i first took notice of environmental quality differences. I decided to study mining engineering because it guaranteed hands on experience immediately and paired it with an environmental engineering minor in college. I am a licensed professional engineer and have been able to learn and lead teams globally with increasing responsibility. I have lead indoor air sampling and water sampling projects. i have also led sustainability and environmental compliance programs for companies like Tesla and NRG. The goal has always been with environmental justice and gaining experience in mind. The technical part of my experience prepares me well for the legal portion. I believe a law degree will be critical to bridging that gap. I serve with a social justice organization (Peace4Kids) that provides resources for youth in foster care. I provided pro bono engineering to the program, while being a volunteer, to lead the land acquisition process for them to develop a campus just outside of los angeles. Working with this organization opened my eyes to the broad reach and importance of social justice beyond environmental justice, which pushes me to serve in more than one way. Finally I started an environmental stewardship ministry in my local church. All of these points are trying to paint the picture that I am equipped professionally and my extracurriculars are very intentional. With more than 5 years of environmental engineering and real world compliance experience, I am able to not only contribute to the law program but I am able to make sense of it. My experience as a black man living in those stark environments really drives me to help communities like mine. – the draft you see is particular to yale but no need to mention a specific school
