COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND SECOND CHANCES
Using relevant sections of Mike Rose’s book Back to School and your personal experience as a community college student, write an essay where you discuss whether or not community colleges provide a second chance to students who, for a variety of reasons, did not have the opportunity to fully benefit from education earlier in life. What do you think of the “severe budget cuts” that are forcing community colleges “to trim staff, classes, and services?” (Rose 19).
Your essay must consist of at least five well-developed paragraphs, and it should be organized as follows.
The first paragraph should introduce the topic by discussing BRIEFLY how, according to Rose, community colleges provide a second chance. What does he mean by that? Then you need to provide your thesis statement by explaining IN A SENTENCE OR TWO what you think about this idea. Do you agree, disagree, or agree just in part? DO NOT START SUPPORTING YOUR OPINION IN THE FIRST PARAGRAPH.
The second paragraph should begin with a strong topic sentence that introduces a SPECIFIC POINT Rose makes Community Colleges and second chances. DO NOT QUOTE, BUT INTRODUCE ROSE’S POINT USING YOUR OWN WORDS. Whenever you refer to specific parts of his book, put the page number in parenthesis. In the rest of the paragraph, you should explain what Rose meant by that point and what you think about it. To support your opinion, you are welcome to use your personal experience.
The third paragraph should begin with a strong topic sentence that introduces a DIFFERENT POINT Rose makes Community Colleges and second chances. Make sure this point is DIFFERENT from the one you discussed in the previous paragraph, and not the same idea expressed using different words.
The fourth paragraph should begin with a strong topic sentence that introduces a DIFFERENT POINT Rose makes Community Colleges and second chances. Make sure this point is DIFFERENT from the ones you discussed in the previous paragraphs, and not the same idea expressed using different words.
The fifth paragraph should provide a conclusion to your essay by brining its ideas together. Based on what you have argued in your essay, do you think public funding for community colleges should be cut? If no, what do you think community college would need, instead of budget cuts? If yes, what alternatives do you recommend for adults who need a second chance in life?
