Case Study 3: The Neighborhood’s First Stay-at-Home Dad
You’re a social worker in a suburban neighborhood that largely houses military families. One of the
families in your community is unique in that the mother is a high-powered leader in the Navy, and the
father has chosen to stay at home and take care of their two young children.
Even though he’s perfectly happy and finds his role fulfilling, the father frequently faces subtle and overt
forms of sexism from neighbors and other parents.
He’s often the only man at neighborhood gatherings or school events, where his parenting capabilities
are subtly questioned due to his gender. People regularly express surprise or even disapproval when
they learn about his situation. Neighbors have also commented on his “bravery” for taking on “mom
duties.” Moreover, he’s excluded from the weekly neighborhood “moms’ group” which is sponsored by
your employer, where important community discussions often take place.
Despite these challenges, the stay-at-home dad continues his role, believing it’s the best arrangement
for their family. However, the continuous judgment and stereotyping are taking a toll on his mental
health, leading him to seek support from you, the neighborhood’s social worker.
Create a Public Service Announcement (PSA): Develop a PSA addressing the unique challenges the individual in your chosen case study encounters and promote the principles of allyship within the community.
