Instructions
1. Obtain a patient education brochure or pamphlet from your worksite or other healthcare agency.
2. Critique the document in terms of its appearance, font size, readability, use of graphics, etc.
3. Calculate the readability using one of the following formulas and identify which formula was used: (a) Gunning-Fox, (b) Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), or (c) Fry.
4. Develop the Readability Assignment paper by addressing the following components:
Content Requirements
A. Introduction: (1 paragraph)
Provide a concise overview of the paper.
B. Patient Education Brochure/Pamphlet Critique (2-3 paragraphs)
Introduce the title of the brochure/pamphlet (do not include the name of the agency), the health topic it is presenting, and the target population it is focusing on.
Analyze and critique the document by describing its appearance, font size, readability, use of graphics, etc.
Discuss which components of the brochure/pamphlet could be improved, and provide your rationale on why.
Describe which readability formula you used (Gunning-Fox, Simple Measure of Gobbledygook [SMOG], or Fry) and present your calculated score’s results.
Determine if your calculated score’s results are appropriate or not for the target population the brochure/pamphlet is focusing on.
H. Conclusion (1 paragraph)
Summarize the key points of the paper.
