My POST FROM UNIT 6 TO USE AS REFERENCE TY
The hospital has made a commendable step in creating an internal policy that calls for increased sensitivity, competence, and staff training to improve provision of care services to the LGBTQIAP+ community. The policy shift is appropriate since it safeguards the rights of a minority population. However, the hospital should not publicly disclose this policy because of the potential unintended consequences, including backlash from certain sections of the community that oppose LGBTQIAP+ rights, the risk of targeted actions, and the need to focus on provision of universal care.
The leadership of the hospital must embrace policies that advance access to quality care for all patients, irrespective of identity markers. Disclosing its pro-LGBTQIAP+ policy aligns with promoting equality and inclusivity. However, publicly announcing this policy could attract backlash from communities that have strong cultural or religious objections to LGBTQIAP+ rights, and this could erode the trust they have in the hospital (Westwood, 2022). Equally, the hospital may be targeted for promoting LGBTQIAP+ rights because of social or political reasons. For example, reports reveal systematic attacks on gender-affirming and transgender healthcare (American College of Physicians, 2024). Since the regional hospital serves a diverse population, it should emphasize provision of universal care, which requires facilities to provide quality care to all patients irrespective of their backgrounds or identity (Khuntia et al., 2022). Therefore, it is prudent for the hospital to implement the policy change without disclosing it.
Healthcare facilities should promote inclusive policies and practices to increase access to care for all population groups. Targeted approaches, such as the internal policy that calls for increased sensitivity, competence, and staff training to improve provision of care services to the LGBTQIAP+ community, are welcome developments that illustrate the hospital’s commitment to promoting inclusivity. Nevertheless, implementation of the policy should be discrete to avoid potential negative consequences. Accordingly, the facility should implement the policy, but remain focused on providing universal care for all to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.
