The PBS video, The Draft Riots of 1863, quotes Walt Whitman writing about the riots: “I do not feel it in my heart to abuse the poor people or call for ropes or bullets for them. We are in the midst of strange and terrible times. One is pulled a dozen different ways in his mind, and hardly knows what to think or do.” Do you agree with Whitman?
