NUR4636L Community Practicum
Guided Worksheet One
Week 1: Title, Introduction/Background and Problem
Week One
During this first week of NUR4636L, you will be developing the initial components for the first sections of your COMMUNITY Project. This week includes the introduction/background and problem description and significance. You will post this as your initial post, receive suggestions and questions from faculty and student colleagues, then make all necessary edits/changes and copy and paste the content of this worksheet into the COMMUNITY Project, thus building the project each week. Please include all references used in this section on a separate reference page with references in APA format.
(Introduction and Background)
Place the title of your project as the heading of this section and it is not bolded. Start the introduction with a powerful statement or two to stimulate interest. Identify the purpose of the project and provide a preview of what the project will include. You should identify the purpose of your project and your final sentence. Remember formal assignments are in the third person so avoid I, me, and we, etc. Refer to yourself as the ‘RN-BSN student’.
Problem
Start this section with identification of the community health problem. In this section, explain the issue identified during the windshield survey and its significance at the local, state, and national levels. Let us pretend you identified many bicyclists not wearing helmets when riding. Your Introduction and Background would begin with some compelling statistics about the broad impact of not wearing helmets, where helmets might be required in the US, how well they protect people, the number of cyclists seen each year in ED’s across the country with head injuries, etc. Your problem section would then address what you found specifically in the community, specific details about the community (traffic patterns, bicycle lanes, etc). What is the significance of this problem…the human toll, the impact on the health system, etc. Then you will end the problem section with a purpose statement. Something like this: “The purpose of this RN-BSN Community Practicum Project is to educate the public on the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle to reduce life threatening head injuries”.
